The Mekong River is one of the most important rivers in the Indochinese Peninsula, and the water-energy nexus is the main challenge for Mekong countries including Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, and Vietnam. Under the support of the Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST), Taiwan, National Tsing Hua University (NTHU) collaborates with the National Metal and Materials Technology Center (MTEC). Thailand to establish Taiwan-Thailand Innovation Center for Clean Water and Sustainable Energy (WISE). The primary goal of the Taiwan-Thailand WISE Center is to expand the collaboration between researchers from Taiwan and the Mekong River areas to achieve technological innovation and cultivate local talents, technological internationalization and environmental sustainability in the Mekong River basin.
Inaugurated on April 28, 2022 (Thursday), NTHU and MTEC have together launched the overseas offices of Taiwan-Thailand WISE Centers at NTHU and MTEC. During the unveiling ceremony, both the NTHU Senior Vice President, Professor Sinn-Wen Chen and the Director of the Environmental Research Group at MTEC, Dr Chanchana Thanachayanont mentioned that NTHU is an internationally well-known university in water treatment innovation, low-carbon green energy, and applied advanced materials in the field of environment, while MTEC is famous on an environmentally benign nanomaterial, circular economy, and water management.
Therefore, the cooperation between NTHU and MTEC can promote the development of novel technologies and cultivate talents for clean water and sustainable energy in the Mekong River basin. To reinforce the international collaboration, WISE also invites Dr Nuanchan Singkran at Mahidol University, Thailand, Director Oulavanh Sinsamphanh at the National University of Laos, Academician Sotha Chek at the Royal Academy of Cambodia, and Professor Van Pham Dang Tri at Can Tho University, Vietnam to join the research teams. Over the initial three-year period of the collaboration, several events have been planned which include visiting professorship, engineers without boarder, water-energy nexus collaboration, and several joint workshops and seminars on specialized topics. It is hoped that Taiwan-Thailand WISE will catalyze the exchange of expertise and intimate collaboration on clean water and sustainable energy between Taiwanese and those researching from the Mekong River area and New-South Bound countries.
